Wamboin Community Association

St. Andrew's Church

On 1st October 2012, St Andrew's Wamboin and St Peter's Sutton joined together to become the Sutton Road Mission District, one congregation sharing two campuses. Importantly, our close and historical association with St John's Canberra now has been replaced by independence. We are a local community church and our links throughout Sutton and Wamboin, including with the Fire Brigades, are significant.

St Andrew's church is on the corner of Norton and Poppet Roads, Wamboin. While we are an Anglican church, we have a diverse congregation: we warmly welcome everyone, of any denomination - or none - who comes to share our worship.

Services at St Andrew’s are at 9.30 am on the first and third Sundays of each month; Morning Prayer is on the first Sunday and Holy Communion on the third. There are also 9.30 am services on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and a special service on Christmas Eve. Our sister church, St Peter's in Sutton, has similar services on the second and fourth Sundays at 9.30 am, as well as their own Easter and Christmas Day services.

Morning tea after each service, and regular coffee and dessert evenings enable us to know each other better. New residents are especially welcome to join our caring group, and please bring your children.

The Ven. Dr. Royce Thompson is the pastor for both churches and their communities. And the church encourages intelligent study of the scriptures. Advent studies of the coming of Christ are held over the four-week period leading up to Christmas. And Lenten studies are offered weekly in the six-week period before Easter. The sixth and final session traditionally includes sharing a delightful meal based on Palestinian/Jewish Passover traditions. Everyone is invited to the study sessions, and even if people are unable to participate in the studies, they are most welcome to attend the meal held as part of the final session.

We consider it important to assist the Wamboin Community Association with the organisation of the annual Christmas carol service in the lead up to Christmas, and each Christmas Eve at 6.00 pm we hold a Children's Nativity pageant on the grounds at St Andrew's with a cast of real animals. We always need more angels and shepherds.

We run a Kids Club – we meet at St Andrew’s from 5.30pm to 7pm during NSW school terms. The children’s ages range from pre-school to early teens. (Our kids are growing up, but still come.) They enjoy craft activities, Bible study, songs, games, and share a meal. We strongly encourage parents to participate.

The church is also used during the week by a number of community groups, including the Wonderful Women of Wamboin, and a book club.
